Salah (নামাজ / Prayer) in Islamic Tradition & Modern Science

Salah (Arabic: الصلاة—As-Salah; Bengali: নামাজ; English: Islamic Ritual Prayer) is the central pillar of Islamic worship, performed five times daily. Beyond its profound spiritual, psychological, and disciplinary dimensions, Salah functions as a holistic, low-impact physical and neurological routine that offers extraordinary health benefits to the human body and mind.

1. Traditional & Classical Islamic Perspective

From the perspective of Tibb an-Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine) and classical Islamic scholarship:

Spiritual Serenity as Physical Healing: Just as grief and anxiety create internal dryness and physical distress, the deep spiritual connection, remembrance (Dhikr), and tranquility found in Salah soothe the nervous system and restore bodily equilibrium.

Balanced Physical Activity: Salah provides a balanced movement regimen that engages every major joint and muscle group without causing exhaustion or wear and tear, ensuring longevity and physical readiness.

Circadian Alignment: The timing of the five daily prayers—stretching from early dawn before sunrise, through midday, afternoon, sunset, and night—naturally synchronizes human physiology, rest, and activity cycles with natural biological rhythms.

2. Physical & Biomedical Health Benefits of Salah Postures

Each distinct posture in Salah maps directly to modern ergonomic, orthopedic, and physiological health benefits:

Salah Posture / Movement

Biomechanical Action

Modern Scientific & Physiological Benefit

Qiyam (Standing)

Upright posture with eyes focused on the place of prostration.

• Postural Alignment: Strengthens core stabilizing muscles, aligns the spinal column, and improves balance and proprioception. • Focus: Reduces mental distraction and enhances cognitive concentration.

Ruku (Bowing)

90-degree flexion at the waist with hands resting on the knees.

• Spinal Decompression: Stretches the lower back, hamstrings, and calves, relieving pressure on the spinal vertebrae. • Circulatory Support: Blood flows toward the upper torso and head, easing strain on the heart and improving spinal flexibility.

Sujud (Prostration)

Placing the forehead, nose, hands, knees, and toes on the ground.

• Cerebral Perfusion: Lowers the head below the heart, increasing oxygenated blood flow to the brain, which enhances memory, concentration, and nervous system function. • Sinus & Respiratory Relief: Helps drain the nasal passages and sinuses, reducing congestion. • Joint & Muscle Flexibility: Stretches the ankles, knees, hip joints, and toes, preventing stiffness.

Jalsah & Tashahhud (Sitting)

Sitting upright on the left foot with the right foot flexed.

• Pelvic & Thigh Strengthening: Stimulates peristalsis in the digestive tract, aids pelvic floor strength, and relieves lower back tension. • Micro-circulation: Compresses lower limb blood vessels temporarily, enhancing venous return when released.

3. Comprehensive Health Impacts

Cardiovascular & Metabolic Fitness: Performing daily prayers acts as a form of light, low-intensity aerobic exercise. It burns calories, regulates blood circulation, improves glucose metabolism, and helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels without placing undue stress on cardiac tissue.

Mental Health & Stress Reduction: The rhythmic, meditative movements combined with rhythmic breathing during recitation lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels. It acts as an active mindfulness practice that alleviates anxiety and promotes emotional resilience.

Joint Mobility & Injury Prevention: Because Salah requires active flexion and extension of the neck, spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles multiple times a day, it serves as a natural anti-stiffness routine, preserving joint cartilage health and flexibility into old age.

📖 Hadith Reference ▼

Because the health benefits of Salah are derived from physical movements and spiritual practices established across multiple canonical traditions, specific Hadith references highlight the spiritual tranquility (Sakinah) and physical composure (Tuma'ninah) required during prayer:

Hadith Reference Details for Salah (Prayer)

  1. Requirement of Composure and Tranquility (Tuma'ninah) in Prayer

  • English Translation & Context:

Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Prophet (ﷺ) entered the mosque, and a man entered and prayed... The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." ... He instructed him: "When you stand for prayer, say Takbir, then recite what is easy for you from the Quran, then bow until you are tranquil in your bowing, then rise until you stand straight, then prostrate until you are tranquil in your prostration, then sit until you are tranquil in your sitting, and do that throughout all your prayer."

— Sahih al-Bukhari (757) & Sahih Muslim (397)

  • Medical & Physiological Correlation:

The prophetic insistence on Tuma'ninah (tranquility and pause in every posture—standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting) ensures that the physiological benefits of each movement—such as spinal decompression in Ruku, cerebral blood flow in Sujud, and joint flexion—are fully realized by giving the body time to adjust hemodynamically and orthopedically.

🤲 Dua / Ruqyah ▼

In the Noble Qur'an, Salah is mentioned directly and indirectly over 80 times. It is commanded as the foremost obligation of faith, a daily spiritual discipline, and a means of peace, inner healing, and protection.

  1. Command to Establish Regular Prayer with Physical Movements

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:43) — Bowing in Prayer:text{وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ} "And establish prayer and give Zakat and bow with those who bow [in Ruku]."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:238) — Maintaining All Prayers:text{حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ} "Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient."

  1. Prayer as a Means of Inner Peace and Stress Relief

Surah Ra'd (13:28) — Tranquility of the Heart:text{الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ} "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153) — Seeking Strength in Prayer:text{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ} "O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."

  1. Prostration (Sujud) for Relief from Emotional Burden

Surah Al-Hijr (15:97–98) — Soothing Distressed Chest and Mind:text{وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ۞ فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ} "And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [in Sujud]."

  1. Timed Circadian Alignment of Daily Prayers

Surah An-Nisa (4:103) — Prescribed Times:text{إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا} "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."
