Fenugreek
In Islamic traditional medicine (Tibb an-Nabawi) and classical Arabic pharmacology, Fenugreek—known in Arabic as Al-Hulbah (الحُلْبَة) and commonly referred to as Methi (মেথি)—holds a revered status as a powerful healing seed.
Classical scholars and physicians, including Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (Zad al-Ma’ad) and Ibn Sina (Avicenna), valued fenugreek as both a restorative food and an exceptional remedy for internal cleansing and strength.
Temperament and Properties in Tibb an-Nabawi
Classical physicians categorized fenugreek according to its elemental nature and physiological effects:
Temperament: Hot and Dry in the second degree.
Warming and Dissolving: It possesses a powerful warming action that cuts through deep coldness, clears stagnant phlegm, and dissolves internal blockages.
Digestive and Respiratory Tonic: Stimulates appetite, relieves chronic coughs, expels lung congestion, and eases heavy breathing or asthma.
Joint and Tissue Support: Eases cold-induced joint stiffness, muscular aches, and physical fatigue.
📖 Hadith Reference
In classical collections of Prophetic medicine (Tibb an-Nabawi), fenugreek is recorded through historical accounts and medical traditions detailing its use for recovery and convalescence:
A. The Prescription for Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (RA)
Ibn al-Qayyim records in Zad al-Ma'ad: "It is narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) visited Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Mecca when he was ill. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Call a doctor for him.' Al-Harith bin Kaladah came and examined him, then said: 'There is no serious illness with him. Prepare for him a Fareeqah (a dish made of fenugreek mixed with fresh Ajwah dates, cooked together). Let him consume it.' They followed this advice, and he recovered."
Hadith Status: This is recorded as a historical and medical report (Athar) within classical compilations of Prophetic medicine, such as those by Abu Nu'aym and Ibn al-Qayyim.
B. Statement of the Companions
Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) is widely cited in classical medical literature as saying: "If the people knew what blessings and healing there are in Al-Hulbah (Fenugreek), they would purchase it and pay for it with its weight in gold."
🌿 Ingredients
Modern nutritional and pharmacological research validates the high therapeutic value of fenugreek seeds:
Trigonelline & Alkaloids: Unique active plant alkaloids that help regulate glucose metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity, and support nervous system health.
Natural Mucilage: A gelatinous soluble fiber that coats and soothes irritated gastrointestinal linings, making it effective for soothing sore throats, acid reflux, and peptic ulcers.
Saponins & Diosgenin: Plant compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, cholesterol-balancing, and hormone-supporting properties.
High Iron & B-Complex Matrix: Provides a dense concentration of iron, folate, and vitamins that combat general weakness and support red blood cell formation.
⚗️ Preparation Method
Morning Soaked Water (Methi Pani): Soaking a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight and drinking the filtered water on an empty stomach in the morning aids digestion, regulates blood sugar, and cools internal inflammation.
Warm Decoction with Honey: Boiling fenugreek seeds in water for 10–15 minutes, straining, and mixing with raw honey creates a traditional soothing syrup for coughs, chest congestion, and throat infections.
Topical Paste (Poultice): Crushing boiled or soaked seeds into a paste and applying it externally helps soothe boils, swellings, and localized skin inflammation.

Direct Mention: Fenugreek (Al-Hulbah / Methi) is not explicitly named in the Holy Quran.
General Quranic Context: Like other beneficial herbs and vegetation, it falls under the broad category of wholesome provisions and plant life created by Allah for human sustenance, wellness, and healing:وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِيجٍ "And the earth—We have spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [plant life] of every beautiful kind." — Surah Qaf (50:7)
