Musk (মেশক / Misk / المسك) in Tibb an-Nabawi & Traditional Medicine

Musk (Arabic: المسك; known in Bengali and South Asian traditional medicine as মেশক or কস্তুরী) is one of the most revered and noble aromatic substances mentioned in Islamic heritage and classical medicine. Historically obtained from the musk deer (Moschus moschiferus), musk has been prized for over a millennium not only for its incomparable fragrance—referred to by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as the best of all perfumes—but also for its potent therapeutic, stimulant, and cardiac-tonifying properties.

In classical compendiums such as Zad al-Ma’ad and The Canon of Medicine, classical physicians classified musk as warm and dry in the second or third degree, granting it unique medicinal actions:

Cardiac Tonic (Muqawwi al-Qalb): Ibn Qayyim noted that musk possesses a profound invigorating effect on the heart. It clears faintness, relieves palpitations, and strengthens individuals suffering from sudden physical weakness, shock, or exhaustion.

Nervous System Stimulant: Because of its subtle, penetrating aromatic nature (Latif), it ascends quickly to the brain, clearing mental lethargy, supporting spiritual alertness, and relieving neurological sluggishness.

Antidote to Poison & Pestilence: Traditionally, pure musk was used as an active ingredient in compound remedies designed to combat infectious epidemics, dispel noxious vapors (Waba’), and protect the vital organs from toxins.

Hadith References for Musk (মেশক / Misk / المسك)

In authentic Hadith literature, musk is mentioned as the most sublime fragrance created by Allah. It is featured across multiple contexts: as the personal perfume of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), as an essential component of purification rituals, and as a defining characteristic of Paradise and the Day of Judgment.

Primary Hadith Narrations & Citations

A. Musk as the "Best of Perfumes"

The Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly declared musk to be the supreme fragrance above all others:

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: "أَطْيَبُ الطَّيْبِ الْمِسْكُ"

"Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The best of perfumes is musk.'" — Sahih Muslim (Hadith #2252), Jami` at-Tirmidhi (Hadith #991), Sunan an-Nasa'i (Hadith #1905). Grading: Sahih (Authentic).

B. Personal Use by the Prophet (ﷺ) & Applying Before Ihram

The Prophet (ﷺ) routinely applied pure musk to his hair and skin, particularly when entering the state of Ihram for Hajj or 'Umrah:

"Aisha (RA) reported: 'I used to perfume the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for his Ihram when he assumed it, and when he exited Ihram before he performed Tawaf around the House, with a perfume containing musk.'" — Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith #1539) & Sahih Muslim (Hadith #1189). Grading: Muttafaq 'Alayh (Highest tier of authenticity).

C. Ritual Purification After Menstruation (Taharah)

The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed women to use a cloth scented with musk to purify themselves after their menstrual cycle:

"Aisha (RA) reported that a woman asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about how to wash after her menses. He instructed her on how to wash and said: 'Take a piece of cloth scented with musk and purify yourself with it.'" — Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith #314) & Sahih Muslim (Hadith #332).

D. Scent of the Martyrs (Al-Shuhada') and Fasting Mouths

The spiritual and elevated nature of musk is used in Hadith to illustrate sacred states:

The Blood of the Martyr:"By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, no person is wounded in the cause of Allah... except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection with his wound bleeding: the color will be the color of blood, but its scent will be the scent of musk." — Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith #2803) & Sahih Muslim (Hadith #1876).

The Breath of the Fasting Person:"By Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, the odor coming from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk." — Sahih al-Bukhari (Hadith #1904) & Sahih Muslim (Hadith #1151).

In the Noble Qur'an, musk (Al-Misk) is mentioned explicitly by name in the description of the eternal rewards and blessings prepared for the righteous in Paradise (Jannah).

The Key Quranic Verse

Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:25–26)

"They will be given to drink from a pure wine [sealed], whose seal is musk. And for that let the competitors compete." — Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:25–26)

Tafsir & Classical Commentary on the Verse

Classical Quranic commentators (Mufassirun), such as Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurtubi, and Al-Tabari, explain this magnificent imagery in several profound ways:

The Final Seal of Purity (Khitamuhu Misk): When the pure, sealed drink (Rahiq Makhtum) is consumed, its final lingering aftertaste and aroma is that of pure musk. Unlike worldly drinks that leave a stale or heavy aftertaste, the drinks of Paradise leave a pristine, long-lasting fragrance of musk in the mouth of the believer.

The Sealed Vessel: Linguistically, "Khitam" can also refer to the seal placed over the vessel. In Paradise, the sacred vessels containing the purest heavenly drinks are sealed not with clay or wax, but with pure musk, protecting their contents and radiating a magnificent fragrance when opened.

Encouragement for Righteous Action: The verse concludes with "And for that let the competitors compete," urging believers to strive in good deeds, patience, and devotion in this temporary world to attain these sublime, everlasting rewards in the Hereafter.
