English Translation (Saheeh International)
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Al-Baqarah (2:109) is recognized as a vital Passage for Neutralizing Envy-Driven Harm (Ayat Ibtaal Hasad al-Hussad):
1. Neutralizing Envy (Hasad) and Malicious Intentions from Others
- Spiritual Principle: When envy is rooted in malice and a desire to see a believer fail or lose their faith/success, it manifests as heavy spiritual oppression, blockages, and negative whispering. This verse exposes the mechanism of Hasad and commands emotional resilience.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited during Ruqyah sessions when treating individuals who suffer from sudden hostility, sabotage, or heavy spiritual oppression originating from envious people in their social or professional circles. It is blown over drinking water or olive oil to clear away the psychological and spiritual residue of malice.
2. Curing Psychological Burnout, Resentment, and Anxiety
- Spiritual Principle: Dealing with envious people often causes deep anxiety, paranoia, and mental fatigue. The divine command to “pardon and overlook” combined with the reassurance that “Allah is over all things competent” brings profound inner peace (Sakinah).
- Ruqyah Application: Used in spiritual counseling and personal healing to soothe an agitated heart, release resentment toward those who plot harm, and restore emotional stability.
3. Fortifying the Aura Against Spiritual Subversion
- Spiritual Principle: Protecting the heart and mind from internalizing the doubts, negative projections, or malicious wishes cast by envious adversaries.
- Ruqyah Application: Incorporated into daily protective recitations (Wird) to build a resilient spiritual shield against external manipulation, slander, and covert envy.

📜 Tafsir / Commentary
Classical mufassireen explain the psychological warfare, envy, and spiritual resilience addressed in this verse:
1. The Root Cause of Opposition: Envy (Hasad)
Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that this verse warns the believers about the hidden malice and deep-seated envy (Hasad) harbored by many among the People of the Scripture. Despite knowing full well that Muhammad (ﷺ) is the true Messenger and that Islam is the truth, their blinding jealousy ("Min ‘indi anfusihim") drives them to desire the spiritual downfall of the believers, wishing to drag them back into disbelief (Kufr).
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi highlights the divine strategy given to the believers in dealing with such toxic hostility: "Fa‘foo wasfahoo" (So pardon and overlook). He notes that patience, emotional resilience, and overlooking petty hostility disarm the envious opponent while placing absolute trust in Allah's ultimate control ("Innal-laaha ‘alaa kulli shay’in Qadeer").
