In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:31) is utilized as a vital passage for Da’wah, Guidance, and Subduing Afflicting Jinn (Ayat al-Hidayah wal-Munazarah):

1. Preaching to and Guiding Possessing Jinn (Da’wah lil-Jinn)

  • Spiritual Principle: When an individual suffers from possession (Mass), the afflicting Jinn is often rebellious, confused, or misguided. Rather than relying solely on force, a primary Islamic principle of Ruqyah is to first call the entity to truth, Islam, and repentance using verses spoken by believing Jinn.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited during intensive Ruqyah sessions with the firm intention of inviting any listening or possessing Jinn to repent, leave the human body peacefully, and accept the truth, preventing unnecessary harm and guiding them out.

2. Seeking Divine Protection from Painful Punishments and Afflictions

  • Spiritual Principle: The concluding phrase “Wa yujirkum min ‘azaabin aleem” (And protect you from a painful punishment) serves as a direct shield against both spiritual torment and physical suffering inflicted by unseen forces.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over Ruqyah water, olive oil, or directly onto the patient to invoke Allah’s sanctuary and defense against chronic pain, physical torment caused by magic (Sihr), or oppressive spiritual interference.

3. Restoring Repentance and Clearing Spiritual Guilt

  • Spiritual Principle: Sins and disobedience often leave a person spiritually vulnerable to dark forces. This verse bridges the gap back to forgiveness (Maghfirah).
  • Ruqyah Application: Used as a daily healing Wird to cleanse the heart from past spiritual missteps, renewing the covenant of faith (Iman) and strengthening personal spiritual immunity.

1. The Journey of the Jinn Listening to the Quran

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)

Hadith: The Prophet (ﷺ) told his companions on the Night of the Jinn:

«لَقَدْ دَعَانِي دَاعِي الْجِنِّ، فَذَهَبْتُ مَعَهُمْ، فَقَرَأْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنَ»

"The caller of the Jinn came to me, and I went with them and recited the Quran to them." He showed them their tracks and the traces of their fire. They had asked him for provisions, and he told them that every bone over which the name of Allah is mentioned would fall into their hands with plenty of meat, and every piece of dung would be fodder for their animals.

Classical mufassireen explain the unique context and profound invitation embedded in this verse:

1. The Call of the Jinn to Their Kin

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that this verse records the exact words spoken by a group of Jinn who listened to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reciting the Quran and immediately embraced Islam. Returning to their own communities, these believing Jinn preached to their fellow Jinn, urging them to respond to the call of Allah's Messenger, repent from their disbelief, and seek divine protection.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes that this verse serves as a powerful model of sincere guidance, gentle admonition (Da'wah), and warning against spiritual ruin. It highlights that true protection from torment ("Yujirkum min 'azaabin aleem") is achieved exclusively through faith and obedience to Allah's guidance.
