In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah As-Saffat (37:1–11) is universally recognized by scholars and practitioners as one of the most powerful Combative and Expulsion Passages (Ayat al-Harq wa al-Ikhraj):

1. Burning and Subduing Rebellious/Obstinate Jinn (Shaytan Maarid)

  • Spiritual Principle: Verses 7 to 10 explicitly describe Allah’s protection (Hifz) against Shaytan Maarid (rebellious devils) and the pursuit of piercing fire (Shihaabun thaaqib).
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited aloud with clear, impactful tajweed during active Ruqyah sessions when dealing with stubborn, arrogant, or aggressive Jinn possession. The recitation acts as a spiritual fire, causing intense distress, burning sensations, and exhaustion to rebellious spirits, forcing them to submit, desist, or flee.

2. Neutralizing Soothsaying, Fortune-Telling, and Astrological Magic (Sihr)

  • Spiritual Principle: Black magic and sorcery frequently rely on devils eavesdropping or claiming hidden knowledge from the unseen realm.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over Ruqyah water, oil, or direct recitation to break complex spells tied to astrology, dark rituals, or hidden demonic contracts, severing the connection between human sorcerers and their Jinn accomplices.

3. Establishing Divine Protection (Hifz) and Removing Paralysis/Night Terrors

  • Spiritual Principle: The passage establishes a fortress around the human spirit, invoking the same divine guarding mechanism (“Wa hifzan…”) that secures the heavens.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited prior to sleep or sprayed around living spaces to stop sleep paralysis, horrific nightmares, unexplainable shadows, or persistent demonic interference in the household.

1. Shooting Stars as Projectiles Against Eavesdropping Devils

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)

Hadith: While sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), a star shot bright light across the sky. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked what people used to say about it in Pre-Islamic times. They replied that they thought it marked the birth or death of a great person. The Prophet (ﷺ) clarified:

"When our Lord decrees a matter, the angels glorify Him... until news reaches the lowest heaven. The Jinn then snatch a word by theft and are pelted [with meteors], bringing it to their worldly allies (soothsayers/magicians) mixed with a hundred lies."

Classical mufassireen explain the cosmic warfare and angelic protection described in these foundational opening verses:

1. Angelic Ranks and Cosmic Defense System

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir highlights that Allah swears by the angels who stand in strict ranks (As-Saffat) worshipping Him, driving away evil forces (Az-Zajirat), and reciting divine reminders (At-Taliyat). The primary oath affirms Tawheed (the absolute Oneness of Allah). Ibn Kathir explains that the stars in the lowest heaven serve three divine purposes: (1) adornment for the night sky, (2) projectiles (Rujoom) against devils attempting to eavesdrop on angelic decrees, and (3) landmarks for navigation.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes that the phrase "Wa hifzam min kulli shaytaanim maarid" (And as protection against every rebellious devil) establishes a divine boundary. A "Maarid" is an excessively arrogant, malicious, or rebellious Jinn/Shaytan. Allah creates an impenetrable cosmic barrier using flaming meteors (Shihaabun thaaqib) to strike and burn any rebellious spirit that attempts to steal knowledge from the Exalted Assembly (Al-Mala' al-A'la).
