Surah Al-Fatiha
In the tradition of Prophetic medicine and Islamic spirituality, Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening) holds the highest rank as the ultimate spiritual remedy and cure. In fact, it is traditionally known as Ash-Shifa (The Cure) and Ar-Ruqyah (The Spiritual Healing).
Scholars like Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (Healing with the Medicine of the Prophet / Zad al-Ma’ad) highlight profound details regarding its use:
1. Surah Al-Fatiha as a Cure (Ash-Shifa)
Ibn Qayyim famously noted that Surah Al-Fatiha contains a cure for all diseases of the heart and body when utilized with true conviction, spiritual presence, and sincerity. He described how he personally experienced its healing power while staying in Mecca, using it to cure physical ailments when medical doctors were unavailable simply by reciting it repeatedly over Zamzam water and drinking it.
2. Key Titles of Surah Al-Fatiha in Prophetic Tradition
Because of its healing and protective nature, the Prophet (ﷺ) gave or confirmed several names for Surah Al-Fatiha:
As-Salah (The Prayer): Because Allah states in a Hadith Qudsi that He divides the prayer (Al-Fatiha) between Himself and His servant.
Umm al-Quran (The Mother of the Quran): Because its verses encompass the foundational principles of faith, praise, worship, and supplication.
Ar-Ruqyah (The Healing / Protection): As proven by the incident of the scorpion sting, where reciting it served as an immediate cure.

The Hadith Reference: The Story of the Stung Chief
The primary foundational proof for using Surah Al-Fatiha as a physical cure comes from an authentic narration involving the Companions:
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A group of the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) set out on a journey... They arrived at the camp of a desert tribe and asked them for hospitality, but the tribe refused. At that point, the chief of that tribe was stung by a scorpion (or bitten by a snake). The tribesmen tried everything to treat him, but nothing helped. Some of them said to the Companions, "Do you have any medicine or someone who can recite a healing verse (Ruqyah)?" One of the Companions said, "Yes, by Allah, I can perform Ruqyah, but we asked you for hospitality and you refused, so I will not do it unless you give us a flock of sheep." They agreed. The Companion went, recited Surah Al-Fatiha over the chief, and gathered his saliva and spat on the sting (or wiped over it). The chief recovered instantly as if he were untied from a camel's tether, and walked without any trouble. *When they returned to the Prophet (ﷺ), they told him what happened. The Prophet asked, "How did you know that it is a Ruqyah?" Then he smiled and said, "You have done right. Divide the flock and give me a share with you."

Quranic Verses and Tafsir on Healing and Surah Al-Fatiha
While the incident of curing the scorpion sting is detailed in Hadith, the foundational concept of the Quran—and specifically Surah Al-Fatiha—serving as a physical and spiritual cure is established directly in the Quran and elaborated upon in classical Tafsir (exegesis).
- Primary Quranic References on Healing (Shifa)
A. Surah Al-Isra (17:82)
وَنُنَّزِلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ "And We send down of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers..."
Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Ibn Kathir notes that Allah describes the entire Quran as a cure (shifa). He explains that this healing applies to two domains:
Spiritual Healing: Cleansing the heart from doubt, hypocrisy, polytheism, deviation, and evil desires.
Physical Healing: Acting as a remedy (ruqyah) against physical sicknesses, pain, and afflictions when recited with conviction and sincerity.
B. Surah Fussilat (41:44)
قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ "Say: 'It is, for those who believe, a guidance and a healing.'"
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Al-Qurtubi explains that the Quran guides hearts out of ignorance and cures bodies of ailments when used in supplications and ruqyah.
- Surah Al-Fatiha in Tafsir Literature
A. Surah Al-Hijr (15:87)
وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ "And We have certainly given you seven of the often-repeated verses and the great Quran."
Tafsir Summary: Scholars across all major Tafsir works (Ibn Kathir, Al-Tabari, Al-Qurtubi) unanimously agree that the "seven often-repeated verses" (Sab'an min al-Mathani) refers directly to Surah Al-Fatiha.
