Prophetic & Medical Connection (Ruqyah in Traditional Context)

In classical compilations of spiritual medicine (Tibb an-Nabawi) and traditional Ruqyah practices (noted by scholars such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya):

Draining Excess Fluids & Swelling (Gheed al-Ma’): Because this verse describes Allah commanding the earth to swallow water and the waters receding (Gheeda al-Ma’), classical predecessors (Salaf) and practitioners of Prophetic medicine traditionally recited this ayah as part of Ruqyah for conditions involving fluid retention, edema, excess phlegm, or swelling.

Easing Labor & Expulsion: Along with Surah Al-Inshiqaq (84:1–4), this verse was often recited over water for a woman in labor, invoking Allah’s divine power to cause the waters to recede and safely deliver the child.

  1. Word-by-Word & Verse Translation

وَقِيلَ (Wa-qeela) — "And it was said,"

يَا أَرْضُ ابْلَعِي مَاءَكِ (Ya ardu-bla'ee ma'aki) — "'O earth, swallow your water,'"

وَيَا سَمَاءُ أَقْلِعِي (Wa ya sama'u aqli'ee) — "'And O sky, withhold [your rain].'"

وَغِيضَ الْمَاءُ (Wa gheeda al-ma'u) — "And the water subsided,"

وَقُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ (Wa qudiya al-amru) — "And the matter was accomplished,"

وَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ (Wa-stawat 'ala al-Joodiyyi) — "And the ship (the Ark) came to rest on Mount Judi,"

وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ (Wa qeela bu'dan lil-qawmi az-zalimeen) — "And it was said: 'Away with the wrongdoing people!'"

  1. Exegetical (Tafsir) & Linguistic Masterpiece

Linguistic Peak of Eloquence (Balaaghad): Classical Arabic scholars and rhetoricians (such as As-Sakkaaki and Ibn al-Atheer) unanimously cite Surah Hud (11:44) as one of the greatest linguistic triumphs in Arabic literature. In just 21 concise words, it conveys the absolute sovereignty of Allah over nature, the immediate cessation of a global deluge, the execution of divine judgment, and the safe landing of the Ark.

The Direct Commands to Earth and Sky:

"O earth, swallow your water": The earth absorbed the overflowing water that had sprung forth from its springs.

"O sky, withhold": The sky instantly ceased raining upon the divine command.

"And the water subsided": The flood levels sank and receded completely.

Resting on Mount Judi:

The Ark of Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him) safely settled upon Mount Judi (historically located in modern-day southeastern Turkey near the border with Syria and Iraq).
