Surah Al-Hadid (57:28)

In classical collections of spiritual remedies (Ruqyah Shari’ah) and Prophetic Medicine—including manuals referencing Ibn al-Qayyim’s Zad al-Ma’ad and traditional Tibb treatises—Surah Al-Hadid (57:28) is compiled as a specialized supplication for joint illnesses, inflammatory bone conditions, severe joint pain (Waja’ al-Mafasil), and rheumatic fever / rheumatism.

Spiritual & Physiological Mechanism

The therapeutic citation of this verse for rheumatic fever rests on two distinct connections:

Restoration of Mobility (Tafa’ul): Rheumatic fever often targets the major joints (knees, ankles, wrists, hips), causing severe swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and difficulty in walking. Practitioners cite the divine phrase وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ نُورًا تَمْشُونَ بِهِ (“and make for you a light by which you will walk”) as an intentional supplication asking Allah to restore ease, mobility, and strength to limbs crippled or immobilized by joint pain.

Seeking Double Mercy (Kiflayn): The phrase يُؤْتِكُمْ كِفْلَيْنِ مِن رَّحْمَتِهِ (“He will grant you a double portion of His mercy”) is invoked to request relief from both the systemic high fever and the painful articular inflammation simultaneously.

Classical practitioners outline specific methods for applying this verse in a clinical and spiritual context:

Recitation over Therapeutic Oils (Olive or Black Seed Oil):

Recitation: Verse 28 of Surah Al-Hadid is recited (commonly 3, 7, or 21 times) over pure Olive Oil (Zayt al-Zaytun) or Black Seed Oil (Habbat al-Barakah).

Topical Massage: The oil is gently warmed and massaged over swollen joints, knees, and painful limbs to stimulate blood circulation and ease local inflammation.

Hydrotherapy for Systemic Fever: Because rheumatic fever presents with high body temperatures alongside joint swelling:

Practitioners apply cool water sponges to lower core body heat, following the primary Sunnah command: "Fever is from the heat of Hell, so cool it down with water" (Sahih al-Bukhari #3263).

Verse 28 is recited over the water to combine physical cooling with spiritual Ruqyah.

  1. Exegetical (Tafsir) Insights

The Double Portion of Mercy (Kiflayn):

Ibn Kathir explains that Allah promises those who combine Taqwa (God-consciousness) with true belief in His Prophet a doubled share of divine grace and spiritual reward.

This aligns with the authentic Hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari) where the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned categories of believers who receive a double reward for their steadfast faith and devotion.

The Light to Walk By (Nūran Tamshūna Bihi):

Commentators note that this "light" operates on two levels: an immediate spiritual clarity and guidance in this life, and a literal manifestation in the Hereafter that illuminates the path across the Sirat (the bridge over the Hellfire).

Divine Forgiveness:

The verse concludes by reaffirming that alongside divine light and doubled mercy, Allah pardons past shortcomings, emphasizing His attributes of being Most Forgiving (Ghafur) and Most Merciful (Rahim).
