English Translation (Saheeh International)

“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.”

Bengali Translation (বাংলা অনুবাদ)

(৮২) «আর আমি কুরআন থেকে এমন কিছু নাজিল করি যা মুমিনদের জন্য আরোগ্য ও রহমত; আর তা জালেমদের ক্ষতিই কেবল বৃদ্ধি করে।»

Surah Al-Isra (17:82) is universally recognized by scholars as the crown verse of healing (Ayat ash-Shifa) in the entire Quran, serving as the core justification for Ruqyah Shari’ah:

1. The Ultimate Source for All Types of Ruqyah

  • Spiritual Principle: The Quran itself is an active, living medicine (Shifa) and mercy (Rahmah). Unlike worldly medicine, which treats specific symptoms, the Quran treats the core root of both spiritual and physical maladies.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over water, olive oil, honey, or directly over the afflicted person. It is the primary verse used to neutralize black magic (Sihr), the Evil Eye (Ayn), envy (Hasad), and Jinn possession.

2. Healing Heart Diseases, Trauma, and Anxiety

  • Spiritual Principle: The heart accumulates spiritual rust, anxiety, depression, and trauma from worldly stress. The Quran cleanses and revives the heart.
  • Ruqyah Application: Used extensively in psychological and spiritual therapy to soothe chronic worry, panic, and emotional trauma, bringing immediate tranquility (Sakinah) to the chest.

3. Restoration of Physical Health and Immune Support

  • Spiritual Principle: Bringing divine words into contact with the body to stimulate natural and spiritual recovery.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited repeatedly while blowing lightly (Nafth) over areas of physical pain, chronic illness, or fatigue, trusting entirely in the promise that the Quran is a complete cure (Shifa).

Classical mufassireen explain the nature and scope of healing contained within the Holy Quran:

1. Dual Healing: Spiritual and Physical (Shifa'un wa Rahmah)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that when the Quran is recited, understood, and acted upon, it removes spiritual diseases from the heart—such as doubt, hypocrisy, ignorance, and polytheism. It also serves as a physical healing and mercy when used as Ruqyah for bodily illnesses, pain, and afflictions. However, its benefit is exclusively reaped by the believers (Lil-mu'mineen).

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes that Shifa applies to both psychological illnesses (anxiety, depression, grief) and physical ailments. He explains that the Quran heals the hearts of doubts and provides a complete mercy (Rahmah) by guiding humanity to eternal safety.
