In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Fatir (35:34) is widely utilized as a key passage for emotional, psychological, and inner spiritual healing:

1. Curing Chronic Depression, Grief, and Sadness

  • Spiritual Principle: The core phrase “أَذْهَبَعَنَّاالْحَزَنَ” (Azhaba ‘annal-hazan — “Who has removed from us all sorrow”) is a direct declaration of Allah’s divine power to lift emotional pain and heavy hearts.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited repeatedly by practitioners or individuals suffering from clinical depression, deep grief, heartbreak, or persistent sadness. Placing the right hand over the heart while reciting this verse helps restore inner light, hope, and emotional equilibrium.

2. Relieving Health Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and Overwhelming Worry

  • Spiritual Principle: Spiritual afflictions such as the Evil Eye (Ayn), envy (Hasad), or demonic whispers (Waswas) frequently manifest as unexplained dread, fear of disease, or constant panic.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over Ruqyah water or olive oil, or recited as a daily healing Wird (protective mantra), asking Allah to extinguish the flames of anxiety and grant serenity (Sakinah).

3. Restoring Mental Peace and Emotional Resilience

  • Spiritual Principle: True healing requires shifting the heart’s focus from worldly distress to praising Allah (Al-Hamdulillah) for His infinite forgiveness (Ghafoor) and appreciation (Shakoor).
  • Ruqyah Application: Used in spiritual therapy to break negative thought loops and instil unshakeable trust (Tawakkul) in Allah’s mercy and ultimate relief.

Classical Quranic commentators highlight this verse as one of the ultimate expressions of relief, peace, and divine gratitude:

1. Removal of All Grief and Sorrow (Azhaba 'Annal-Hazan)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that this verse depicts the dwellers of Paradise as they enter the Abode of Eternal Peace. They praise Allah for lifting away every form of grief, fear, anxiety, and hardship (Al-Hazan) that they experienced during their worldly trials and physical existence. Ibn Kathir notes that "Al-Hazan" encompasses all types of sorrow, whether caused by illness, worldly stress, or fear of the Hereafter.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi elaborates that scholars interpreted "Al-Hazan" in various ways: some stated it refers to the anxiety over provisions and survival in the world, while others noted it covers physical pain, mental fatigue, and emotional suffering. Allah removes all of it completely for those He welcomes into His mercy.
