In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Al-A’raf (7:117–122) is universally recognized as a supreme Combative and Nullifying Passage (Ayat al-Ibtaal wal-Ikhraj):

1. Complete Neutralization and Destruction of Black Magic (Sihr)

  • Spiritual Principle: The explicit decree “وَبَطَلَمَاكَانُوايَعْمَلُونَ” (Wa batal_a maa kaanoo ya’maloon — “And abolished was what they were doing”) acts as an absolute spiritual cancellation of any magical spell, knot, or ritual.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited continuously during Ruqyah sessions while placing the hand over the chest or abdomen of an afflicted person. Repeatedly chanting “Wa batal_a maa kaanoo ya’maloon” breaks magical ties, purifies the physical body, and nullifies toxic residues from ingested or contacted sorcery.

2. Humiliating and Expelling Rebellious Jinn (Sooghireen)

  • Spiritual Principle: Sorcerers and their Jinn accomplices operate out of pride, arrogance, and oppression. This passage guarantees their utter defeat and humiliation (“Anqalaboo saaghireen”).
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited with power and firm voice inflection during exorcisms to break the ego of stubborn Jinn, demonstrating that their efforts are entirely doomed to disgrace before Allah’s words.

3. Restoring Spiritual Clarity, Faith, and Repentance

  • Spiritual Principle: Just as Pharaoh’s sorcerers abandoned falsehood and fell into prostration upon witnessing divine truth, this passage helps clear spiritual confusion, brain fog, and demonic whispering (Waswas).
  • Ruqyah Application: Used as part of daily protective recitations (Wird) or over Ruqyah water to cleanse the mind and heart, anchoring the individual firmly in pure Tawheed and unshakeable spiritual strength.

Authentic Hadith & Classical Ruqyah Context

1. The Sword Against Black Magic (Ibtaal As-Sihr)

Classical Context: Scholars of Ruqyah Shari'ah classify Surah Al-A'raf 7:117–122 as one of the most lethal weapons in spiritual medicine. Alongside Surah Ta-Ha (20:69) and Surah Yunus (10:81–82), these verses form the triad of "Ayat Ibtaal as-Sihr" (Verses for the Nullification of Magic). Practicing raqis recite this passage repeatedly over patients suffering from eaten, buried, or suspended magic to trigger severe internal rejection of the spell and force the afflicting Jinn to flee or burn.

📜 Tafsir / Commentary ▼

Classical mufassireen view this passage as the definitive turning point where black magic is not only exposed, but completely shattered and humiliated by divine power:

1. The Annihilation of Sorcery and the Establishment of Truth

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that when Musa cast down his staff by Allah's command, it instantly swallowed up all the fraudulent illusions, ropes, and fake serpents produced by Pharaoh's sorcerers ("Talqaf maa ya'fikoon"). Verse 118 serves as a monumental legal and spiritual principle: "Fa waqa'al-haqqu wa batal_a maa kaanoo ya'maloon" ("So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing"). Ibn Kathir notes that whenever divine truth appears, all forms of sorcery, deception, and magical crafts are instantly invalidated (Batal_a).

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi emphasizes the dramatic psychological defeat recorded in verse 119: "Fa ghuliboo hunaalika wanqalaboo saaghireen" ("And thereupon they were overcome and returned disgraced"). The sorcerers—who came seeking honor and reward from Pharaoh—were utterly humiliated. Recognizing the absolute power of Allah, they fell into instant prostration, choosing eternal salvation over temporary sorcery.
