In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Ar-Ra’d (13:28) serves as a master pillar verse for Sakinah (Tranquility) and mental stabilization:
1. Curing Panic Attacks, Severe Anxiety, and Heart Palpitations
- Spiritual Principle: Spiritual afflictions (Ayn, Hasad, or Sihr) and high psychological stress often manifest as physical tightness, rapid heartbeat, and overwhelming panic. The verse explicitly targets the heart (Qalb) to bestow divine stillness (Itmi’nan).
- Ruqyah Application: Recited repeatedly while placing the right hand directly over the heart. Practitioners use it with the firm intention (Niyyah) that Allah calms the nervous system, normalizes the heartbeat, and extinguishes the flames of fear and panic.
2. Neutralizing Satanic Whispers (Waswas) and Psychological Agitation
- Spiritual Principle: Evil spirits and intrusive satanic thoughts thrive on driving a person into constant agitation, worry, and doubt.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited as a daily healing Wird (protective mantra) by individuals suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), intrusive thoughts, insomnia, or constant apprehension, restoring mental clarity and inner quietude.
3. Infusing Ruqyah Water and Oils with Calming Energy
- Spiritual Principle: Transferring the divine blessing of Quranic recitation into physical remedies to treat internal restlessness.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited over water or olive oil, which is then consumed or rubbed over the chest before sleep to promote deep, peaceful rest and relief from stress.

Classical Quranic commentators highlight this verse as the ultimate spiritual foundation for psychological calm, emotional resilience, and heart stability:
1. Attaining Absolute Tranquility (Itmi'nan)
Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that the phrase "Wa tatma'innu quloobuhum bizikril-laah" means that believers' hearts find delight, comfort, and deep rest when Allah is remembered. Their inner restlessness vanishes, and they feel completely satisfied with His decree, protection, and guidance. He emphasizes the divine declaration "Alaa bizikril-laahi tatma'innul-quloob" (Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest), noting that Allah alone is worthy and capable of bringing true, lasting peace to a troubled human heart.
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes that "Zikrullah" (remembrance of Allah) includes reciting the Holy Quran, engaging in Tasbeeh and Tahmeed, and recalling Allah's promise of divine aid and reward. He explains that while worldly pleasures give only temporary distraction, true spiritual and cognitive peace (Itmi'nan) is achieved solely through connection with the Divine.
