English Translation (Saheeh International)
- “And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, ‘We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].’ And [yet] the people learn from the two angels that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.”
- “And if they had believed and feared Allah, the reward from Allah would have been better, if they only knew.”
In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102–103) is universally recognized by scholars as the Absolute Cornerstone Verse for Diagnosing and Destroying Black Magic (Aayat As-Sihr Al-Umm):
1. Curing Separation Magic (Sihr At-Tafreeq) and Marital Discord
- Spiritual Principle: The verse explicitly highlights magic used to separate a husband and wife (“Yufarriqoona bihee baynal-mar’i wa zawjih”). This type of magic manifests as sudden unexplainable hatred, extreme irritability, repulsion toward one’s spouse, or delusion during marital interactions.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited extensively over married couples experiencing irrational hostility or sudden alienation without physical cause. It is blown over drinking water, bath water, and massage oils to break demonic knots binding marital ties.
2. Diagnostic Testing and Unmasking Hidden Sorcery
- Spiritual Principle: Because verse 102 contains the complete spiritual profile of black magic, demonic influence, and divine permission, reciting it during a diagnosis triggers intense physical/psychological reactions in individuals afflicted by Sihr.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited by raqis during diagnostic sessions. Symptoms such as deep tremors, violent nausea, sudden headaches, weeping, or heavy chest tightness upon hearing verse 102 indicate the presence of active black magic.
3. Neutralizing Fear and Restoring Monotheistic Reliance (Tawheed)
- Spiritual Principle: Victims of sorcery often live in terror of the sorcerer or the Jinn. The divine reminder “They do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah” shatters this fear, shifting the mind from demonic dread to total reliance on Allah.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited to soothe severe health anxiety and spiritual panic, instilling firm conviction (Yaqeen) that no magician or demon can override Allah’s absolute protection when a believer holds fast to Taqwa and Iman (verse 103).

Narrator: Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"Iblis places his throne upon the water; then he sends his detachments... One of them comes and says: 'I did not leave him until I separated between him and his wife.' Iblis draws him near and says: 'How excellent you are!'"

📜 Tafsir / Commentary
Classical mufassireen consider this passage the primary textual foundation explaining the reality, origin, spiritual danger, and theological status of black magic (Sihr):
1. Vindication of Prophet Sulaiman and the True Origin of Sorcery
Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that the devils (Shayatin) buried books of black magic under the throne of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon, peace be upon him) and claimed that he ruled by sorcery. Allah explicitly exonerated Sulaiman—"Wa maa kafara Sulaymaanu wa laakinnash-shayaateena kafaroo" (Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved)—establishing that learning, teaching, and practicing sorcery is an act of disbelief (Kufr). Furthermore, Harut and Marut were two angels sent to Babylon as a trial (Fitnah) to warn people against magic before teaching its mechanics.
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi highlights the critical theological clause: "Wa maa hum bi-daaarreena bihee min ahadin illaa bi-iznillaah" (But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah). He notes that magic has a real effect—such as causing physical illness or psychological alienation between spouses—but it possesses no independent power. It can only take effect if Allah allows it as a divine decree or test (Izn Qadari).
