English Transliteration

Wa law laa iz dakhalta jannataka qulta maa shaa’allaahu laa quwwata illa billaah; in tarani ana aqalla minka maalan wa waladaa.

English Translation (Saheeh International)

“And why did you not, when you entered your garden, say, ‘What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah’? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,”

In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Al-Kahf (18:39) is recognized as an essential Shielding and Preventive Verse against Envy, the Evil Eye, and Self-Inflicted Affliction (Ayat al-Wiqayah wal-Hasad):

1. Preventing and Neutralizing the Evil Eye (Al-‘Ayn) and Envy (Hasad)

  • Spiritual Principle: The phrase “Maa shaa’allah, laا quwwata illa billaah” acts as a spiritual lock that secures blessings, preventing destructive envious glances or self-admiration from damaging one’s health, business, or family.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited immediately upon entering one’s home, viewing personal assets, or witnessing a blessing in oneself or others. In active Ruqyah, it is used to break the spiritual knots of envy and jealousy directed toward a person’s livelihood or status.

2. Curing Arrogance, Self-Admiration (Ujb), and Spiritual Blindness

  • Spiritual Principle: Internal spiritual diseases such as pride in one’s wealth, intelligence, or strength leave the heart vulnerable to sudden collapse. This verse realigns the soul with humility and absolute dependence on Allah’s power.
  • Ruqyah Application: Used in spiritual counseling and self-reflection to clear arrogance, ground an agitated or prideful ego, and restore inner peace (Sakinah).

3. Restoring Lost Blessings and Overcoming Financial or Personal Ruin

  • Spiritual Principle: Just as the arrogant owner’s garden in the parable was destroyed overnight due to his ingratitude, reciting and living by this verse restores divine barakah (blessing) to a struggling life or business.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited as part of daily remembrance (Wird) over business spaces, homes, or personal provisions to seek divine protection and continuous grace.

Narrator: Anas ibn Malik or Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with them)

Hadith: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that when someone sees something in themselves, their wealth, or their property that pleases them, they should ward off harm by invoking divine blessing:

«إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ أَخِيهِ أَوْ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ أَوْ مِنْ مَالِهِ مَا يُعْجِبُهُ، فَليُبَرِّكْهُ، فَإِنَّ الْعَيْنَ حَقٌّ»

"If one of you sees something in his brother, in himself, or in his wealth that pleases him, let him invoke blessings upon it [saying 'Maa shaa'allah, tabarakallah'], for indeed the Evil Eye is real."

📜 Tafsir / Commentary ▼

Classical mufassireen explain the core spiritual lesson embedded in this verse regarding arrogance, wealth, and the unseen danger of the Evil Eye (Al-'Ayn) and self-admiration (Ujb):

1. Guarding Blessings Through the Phrase of Submission (Maa Shaa'allah)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that this verse serves as a divine admonition through the story of the two owners of the gardens. When a person admires their own wealth, property, children, or success without attributing it entirely to Allah—failing to say "Maa shaa'allah, laa quwwata illa billaah" ("What Allah wills [has occurred], there is no power except through Allah")—they expose themselves and their blessings to ruin, arrogance, and the destructive effects of self-admiration or envy.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes that this statement is the prescribed prophetic shield (Wiqayah) to protect one's possessions, family, and health from the Evil Eye (Al-'Ayn) and the pride of ownership. It humbles the human ego by acknowledging that all strength and success belong exclusively to Allah.
