English Transliteration

Izaa zulzilatil-ardu zilzaalaha

Wa akhrajatil-ardu athqaalaha

Wa qalal-insaanu maa lahaa

Yawma-izin tuhaddithu akhbaarahaa

Bi-anna Rabbaka awhaa lahaa

Yawma-izin yasduru-nnaasu ashtaatal-li-yuraw a’maalahum

Faman ya’mal mithqaala dharratin khayran yarah

Wa man ya’mal mithqaala dharratin sharran yarah

English Translation (Saheeh International)

When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake

And the earth discharges its burdens

And man says, “What is [wrong] with it?”

That Day, it will report its news

Because your Lord has commanded it.

That Day, the people will depart separated [from categories] to be shown their deeds.

So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,

And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.

Key Ruqyah Values of Surah Az-Zalzalah

1. “Shaking” and Breaking Buried or Deep-Seated Magic (Sihr)

Spiritual Principle: The opening verse—“Izaa zulzilatil-ardu zilzaalaha” (When the earth is shaken with its earthquake)—expresses the force of uprooting hidden things from deep within the ground.

Ruqyah Value: Practitioners frequently recite this Surah to target and “shake lose” deep-seated, hidden, or buried magic (Sihr Maqbur). It is used to dismantle spiritual ties or knots that have taken root in a person’s body, house, or life.

2. Expelling Stubborn Jinn and Demonic Influences

Spiritual Principle: Verses 2 and 6 speak of the earth discharging its burdens and people being separated or driven out in distinct groups.

Ruqyah Value: When performing Ruqyah on a person afflicted by possessive or intrusive Jinn, reciting Surah Az-Zalzalah creates severe discomfort for evil spirits, forcing them to dislodge, weaken, and leave the body.

3. Uncovering Hidden Ailments and Unseen Evils

Spiritual Principle: Verse 4—“Yawma-izin tuhaddithu akhbaarahaa” (That Day, it will report its news)—refers to secrets being exposed and brought to light.

Ruqyah Value: Reciting this verse helps bring clarity when a person suffers from unexplained illnesses that medical tests cannot diagnose, helping to expose whether the root cause is spiritual (such as the Evil Eye, envy, or magic).

4. Cleansing the Body of Toxins and Blockages

Spiritual Principle: Verse 2—“Wa akhrajatil-ardu athqaalaha” (And the earth discharges its burdens)—signifies releasing heavy, unwanted burdens.

Ruqyah Value: Recited over Ruqyah water or oil to help the body expel physical or spiritual toxins (e.g., consumed magic, stomach distress, or chronic heaviness in the limbs and chest).

📖 Hadith Reference ▼

Surah Az-Zalzalah holds an extraordinarily high rank in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), particularly regarding its spiritual weight:

  1. Equivalent to Half of the Quran

Hadith: Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:«إذا زلزلت تعدل نصف القرآن» "‘Izaa zulzilat’ (Surah Az-Zalzalah) is equivalent to half of the Quran."

Reference: Jami` at-Tirmidhi (Hadith 2893 — Graded Sahih by Al-Albani).

Scholarly Note: Scholars explain this is because the Surah deals entirely with resurrection, accounting, and the final outcome of human deeds, which forms a core pillar of Islamic belief.

Classical mufassireen provide profound insights into the themes of this Surah:

  1. The Immense Reality of Accountability

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir highlights that verses 7 and 8 form a universal scale of absolute justice. Every minute action—no matter how small or hidden from human eyes—is fully recorded and will be presented to the individual on the Day of Judgment.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Commenting on the earth reporting its news (tuhaddithu akhbaarahaa), scholars note that the earth itself will act as a witness for or against humanity, testifying to the good or bad deeds performed upon its surface.
