In Islamic spiritual healing, scholars of Ruqyah frequently include Surah Al-Hijr (15:17) as part of the Ayat al-Hifz (Verses of Protection) for several key reasons:

Repelling Shayatin and Evil Spirits: Because this verse explicitly mentions Allah’s absolute power in guarding creation against every cursed devil, reciting it acts as a direct spiritual barrier against demoniac possession, evil whispers (Waswas), and negative energy.

Untying Magic (Sihr) and Breaking Spiritual Afflictions: Spiritual practitioners recite this verse during Ruqyah over water or oil to cleanse a space or person from dark spiritual forces, asserting that Allah’s protection is total and unbreakable.

Restoring Safety and Peace: Reciting “Wa hafiznaahaa min kulli shaytaanir-rajeem” instills confidence and tranquility in a person suffering from night terrors, unexplained fear, or psychological distress caused by spiritual interference.

Classical Quranic scholars explain the context and profound meaning of this verse:

  1. The Protection of the Heavens from Devils

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that Allah created the constellations and stars in the sky as a beauty for onlookers and as a firm shield against rebellious devils (Shayatin). Whenever a devil tries to steal news from the heavens, flaming meteors (Shihab) shoot down to strike and repel them.

Tafsir At-Tabari: Imam Al-Tabari notes that Allah's divine guardianship (Hifz) over the physical universe demonstrates His absolute power to protect whatever He wills from evil influences, specifically accursed and expelled devils (Shaytan Ar-Rajeem).
