English Transliteration

Wa law ja’alnaahu qur’anan a’jamiyyal-laqaaloo lawlaa fussilat aayaatuhu a-a’jamiyyun wa ‘arabiyyun qul huwa lill-azeena aamanoo hudan wa shifaa’; wal-lazeena laa yu’minoona fee azaanihim waqrun wa huwa ‘alayhim ‘amaa; ulaa’ika yunaadawna min makaanin ba’eed.

English Translation (Saheeh International)

“And if We had made it a non-Arabic Qur’an, they would have said, ‘Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?’ Say, ‘It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure.’ And those who do not believe – in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place.”

Surah Fussilat (41:44) contains the explicit phrase “وَشِفَاءٌ” (Wa Shifaa’un — “and a cure”), establishing it as one of the primary Ayat ash-Shifa (Verses of Healing) utilized in Ruqyah Shari’ah:

1. Healing Diseases of the Heart and Psychological Distress

  • Spiritual Principle: Spiritual darkness, chronic doubt, anxiety, and deep-seated spiritual poisons corrupt the inner self. The Quran acts as an active restorative medicine that clears psychological distress.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited during Ruqyah sessions to lift feelings of spiritual heaviness, sadness, depression, and mental fatigue, instilling absolute clarity and faith (Iman).

2. Neutralizing Spiritual Blockages Caused by Envy (Hasad) or Magic (Sihr)

  • Spiritual Principle: Afflictions often manifest when a person’s spiritual senses become clouded or blocked by external negative forces.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over Ruqyah water, oil, or directly over the patient to clear blockages in hearing or heart perception caused by stubborn spiritual interference, opening the heart to divine light and healing.

3. Strengthening Faith as a Shield Against Spiritual Harm

  • Spiritual Principle: True healing requires active belief (Iman). The verse specifies that the Quran is guidance and a cure for those who believe.
  • Ruqyah Application: Used as a daily recitation (Wird) to fortify personal spiritual immunity, protecting the mind and heart from negative whispered promptings (Waswas) and dark spiritual influences.

Classical mufassireen explain the context and profound healing message embedded in this verse:

1. The Quran as a Specific Cure (Shifa) for the Believers

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that Allah highlights the miraculous nature of the Quran being revealed in clear Arabic. He then states the grand principle: "Qul huwa lill-azeena aamanoo hudan wa shifaa" (Say, 'It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure'). Ibn Kathir notes that whoever follows the Quran and turns to it with a believing heart will find complete guidance from error and a definitive cure for whatever spiritual or physical illnesses afflict them.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi explains that the healing (Shifa) in the Quran remedies the sicknesses of doubt, hypocrisy, and spiritual corruption in the heart, while also acting as a healing remedy when recited over the sick. He contrasts this with the disbelievers, whose closed hearts and stubbornness render the Quran's light unhelpful to them, leaving them in spiritual blindness ('Amā).
