English Transliteration

Wa la-in sa’altahum man khalaqas-samaawaati wal-arda layaqoolunnal-laah; qul afara’aytum maa tad’oona min doonil-laahi in aaradaniya-laahu bi-durrin hal hunna kaashifaatu durrihi aw aaradanee birahmatin hal hunna mumsikaatu rahmatik; qul hasbiyal-laahu ‘alayhi yatawakkalul-mutawakkiloon.

English Translation (Saheeh International)

“And if you asked them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they would surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allah? If Allah intended me adversity, are they removers of His adversity? Or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?’ Say, ‘Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him rely the [wise] reliers.'”

In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Az-Zumar (39:38) is a supreme fortress verse used to shatter fear, panic, and reliance on false remedies:

1. Neutralizing Black Magic (Sihr) and Envy (Hasad) by Recognizing Sole Divine Authority

  • Spiritual Principle: People often fall into panic or panic-driven desperation when afflicted by magic or the Evil Eye, fearing that human sorcerers hold permanent power over them. This verse establishes that no created being can remove harm or withhold mercy except Allah.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited during Ruqyah sessions to break psychological terror, superstition, and fear of spiritual practitioners of evil, directing the patient’s focus entirely to Allah as the sole Remover of harm (Kaashif-ud-Durr).

2. Curing Health Anxiety, Paranoia, and Phobias

  • Spiritual Principle: Obsessive worry about catching diseases or suffering harm paralyzes the mind. Uttering “Hasbiyallah” (Sufficient for me is Allah) cuts through all paranoia.
  • Ruqyah Application: Used as a daily healing Wird (protective mantra) by individuals suffering from health anxiety, panic disorders, or obsessive fears, instilling profound inner security and calm.

3. Establishing Unshakeable Trust (Tawakkul) During Spiritual and Physical Recovery

  • Spiritual Principle: True spiritual healing cannot take place without total reliance (Tawakkul) on Allah.
  • Ruqyah Application: Recited over Ruqyah water, olive oil, or directly over the patient to seal the Ruqyah session with the ultimate formula of reliance, ensuring that the heart rests secure in Allah’s sufficiency.

Authentic Hadith References

1. The Power of "Hasbiyallahu" in Times of Severe Distress

Narrator: Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)

Hadith: When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was thrown into the fire, and when the companions were told, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them," it only increased them in faith, and they said:

«حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ»

"Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs." The Prophet (ﷺ) affirmed that this is the ultimate statement of Tawakkul (reliance) that neutralizes all external threats and fears.

Classical mufassireen highlight this verse as one of the ultimate declarations of absolute monotheism (Tawheed) and utter reliance (Tawakkul) upon Allah:

1. The Impossibility of Harm or Benefit Without Allah's Will

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that even the polytheists of Makkah acknowledged that Allah is the Sole Creator of the heavens and earth. Using this undeniable truth, Allah instructs the Prophet (ﷺ) to challenge the false objects of worship: if Allah decrees an illness, harm, spiritual affliction (Durr), or adversity upon a person, can any created being remove it? And if Allah decrees mercy, healing, or provision, can anyone withhold it? The logical conclusion is that only Allah controls harm and benefit.

Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi notes the profound strength embedded in the concluding declaration "Qul hasbiyal-laahu" (Say, 'Sufficient for me is Allah'). He explains that when a believer utters this phrase with true conviction, all worldly fears, anxieties over spiritual attacks, and dependencies on secondary means vanish, leaving the heart anchored entirely in divine protection.
