Surah Ta-Ha (20:69)
وَأَلْقِمَافِييَمِينِكَتَلْقَفْمَاصَنَعُواۖإِنَّمَاصَنَعُواكَيْدُسَاحِرٍۖوَلَايُفْلِحُالسَّاحِرُحَيْثُأَتَىٰ ﴿٦٩﴾
English Transliteration
Wa alqi maa fee yaminika talqaf maa sana’oo; innamaa sana’oo kaydu saahirin wa laa yuflihus-saahiru haythu ataa.
English Translation (Saheeh International)
“And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.”
In Ruqyah Shari’ah (Quranic healing), Surah Ta-Ha (20:69) is universally recognized as one of the most powerful Verses for Nullifying and Destroying Black Magic (Ayat Ibtaal al-Sihr):
1. Neutralizing and Destroying All Forms of Black Magic (Sihr)
- Spiritual Principle: Just as Musa’s staff swallowed the illusions of the sorcerers, this verse acts as a spiritual devourer of magical constructs, knots, talismans, and ingested/sprayed sorcery.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited repeatedly during Ruqyah sessions—especially when treating victims of eaten/drunk magic (Sihr Ma’kul/Mashrub) or buried magic. Practitioners often have the patient drink Ruqyah water recited with this verse, intending that it “swallows” and clears out any toxic magical residue inside the body.
2. Exposing and Defeating Demonic Deceptions and Illusions
- Spiritual Principle: Black magic frequently relies on terrifying the victim through nightmares, phantom sounds, or visual hallucinations. Reminding the soul that it is merely “the trick of a magician” strips away the fear.
- Ruqyah Application: Recited by individuals experiencing severe panic, spiritual paranoia, or sleep paralysis, anchoring the mind in the absolute reality that sorcerers and Jinn have no true creative power or lasting success (“Wa laa yuflihus-saahiru haythu ataa”).
3. Reversing Stagnation Caused by Envious Plotting and Sorcery
- Spiritual Principle: Magic and malicious envy (Hasad) aim to block a person’s life progress, health, or livelihood. This verse guarantees the ultimate failure of those plots.
- Ruqyah Application: Used as a daily protective recitation (Wird) to break stubborn blockages in life affairs, ensuring that any hidden plots or malicious spells are rendered completely void.

Authentic Hadith References & Context
1. The Ultimate Weapon Against Sorcery (Sihr)
Narrator: Ibn Abbas and classical commentators regarding the extraction of magic
Hadith: Scholars of Ruqyah note that verses from the stories of Musa and the sorcerers (found in Surah Ta-Ha, Surah Al-A'raf, and Surah Yunus) form the primary legislative foundation (Nusoos al-Ibtaal) used to dismantle, neutralize, and burn black magic (Sihr). Whenever this verse is recited over water, oil, or directly over an affected person with Yaqeen (certainty), it serves as a spiritual strike that swallows and destroys magical illusions.
📜 Tafsir / Commentary
Classical mufassireen explain the historic context of this verse during the confrontation between Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and Pharaoh's sorcerers:
1. The Immediate Nullification of Illusion and Black Magic (Kaydu Saahirin)
Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Imam Ibn Kathir explains that when the sorcerers of Pharaoh cast their staffs and ropes, creating a mass illusion of crawling serpents that terrified the onlookers and even Musa himself, Allah commanded Musa to throw down his staff. By Allah's power, Musa's staff transformed into a real, massive serpent that rapidly swallowed up every single rope and trick (Talqaf ma sana'oo) crafted by the sorcerers. Allah explicitly defines all sorcery as an optical trick and illusion ("Innamaa sana'oo kaydu saahirin"), affirming that magical deception holds no true reality and cannot withstand divine truth.
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi: Imam Al-Qurtubi emphasizes the absolute closing declaration: "Wa laa yuflihus-saahiru haythu ataa" (And the magician will not succeed wherever he comes from or wherever he goes). He notes that this establishes a universal, permanent rule that black magic, sorcery, and deceptive manipulation are inherently doomed to failure when confronted with the truth of Allah.
